Yesterday was spent creaking from the long run. Today I want to gently get back on it. I decide to run back from Grove Park.
I don't push too hard. It is light after the clock change and for most of the run the sun is out. Towards the end a little tiredness returns to my legs. But I'm feeling fit. Bring on the marathon...

Biggin Hill and then back for a taper
The clocks have changed, the kids don't want to go to bed. I need to do my last long run before starting the taper for the Brighton Marathon. Eventually my wife takes over and I am off.
I decide to run up (and I mean up) to Biggin Hill. I have been training by running my long runs to Time rather than distance. This makes sense today as the pace will be slow, as on the way out I will be gaining height quite rapidly.
I cruise down to Hayes. I run, slightly nervously, through the road in the dark common. I have brought my bright torch which help somewhat. I pass through Keston and onto Leaves Green.
Two police motorbikes scream past ahead I can see lots of blues-and-twos. I can see the Police have shut the road. I ask if I am allowed through, and I am. I pass a serious 3 way car crash. One car has been cut open. The front has been ripped of a top-end Mercedes.
As I near the turn around point, I spot a petrol station. I stop and get some supplies. I run a little further and turn back. At this point I know I have completed my Marathon training. I wanted to get this run done, and by reaching the far point I knew that I had done it and would make it back(I have to get home!). From here to the big day is a gentle taper.
I run back, past the accident and across the common. It's easy running downhill and the pace is faster. I have my wine gums on the hill on Pickhurst Lane. It doesn't feel too bad. I have had 3 gels, wine gum and half a bottle of sports drink. I have stopped to wee, fiddle with the IPhone.
The training has gone well. The last couple of weeks has been dogged by too much work and I would have liked some more sessions but I have really given it a good go. Just need to pray now that the big day is not too hot.
When I get home my wife has left some freshly baked Banana Muffins out for me.

Confidence Boosting, Barefoot Park Run
I've been having some confidence wobbles ahead of the big marathon. Today I decide to do Park Run as I don't feel ready for a 20miler today (but I know it has to be done this weekend, as the last one!). I have been doing my long runs and so have not been to Park Run for a while. The old legs feel a little jaded and as the weather is nice I decide a bit of barefoot action is the way ahead.
On the first lap my feet are cold from the morning dews. I am not pushing hard and rather enjoying the run. The second lap the feet have warmed up. I can see Mike from the club in front and start to pick him off. I never quite reach him in the end.
At the end I can't sprint as that really can hurt my feet. I do pick up the pace. No way was this a full-race effort with the thought of the 20 miler in my mind. When I look at the time, I am surprised. It is a quick time, 20 seconds off my PB (remember no Sprint finish and no race effort!) and my 5th fastest ever.
Because of the amount of longer mileage I have been doing, I could understand my 5km time slipping. The opposite seems to be the case. My confidence soars.

Indulgent Run
I need to get some pace back into my running. I have been doing the big miles but need to get some speed in else I will fail due to being a one pace plodder. So tonight I plan a quick 4.5km blast from Grove Park.
However it is a beautiful day and I am sick of work. I dream of running across a sunny Beckenham Place Park. I decide to "treat" myself by doing the longer run back from Lewisham
Even though I get out on time, the sun is in the last death throws of the day. I feel tired but having watched a documentary about John Bishop last night, who cycled from Paris to the channel, rowed across the channel and then ran 3 back-to-back Mararthons, I was inspired. I just knuckled down and got on with it.
Today was one of those days where I got caught at the traffic lights, had to stop and fiddle with the IPhone and stop to sip a drink. I was also plodding again, so the pace wasn't electric. It was good to get the solid miles in.
The plan is to do Park Run tomorrow for a little bit of pace.

Catch up run
I needed to run yesterday, but work got in the way and I didn't leave the office until gone 7. So today I need to catch up some miles so a double-bubble is on the cards.
I am woken in the night by the baby and then cannot get off to sleep. A bad nights sleep doesn't stop me cracking on. I get the train to Nunhead and have a pretty uneventful run in from there. Initially I feel the benefit of the extra days rest but then I descend in to plodding and don't even really pick it up in the city

Defiant Run
Work was conspiring to keep me there and deny me my second run today. But I am resolute and dispatch anything that comes my way. I leave the office and head to Cannon Street.
It's still light and I can feel spring is well under way. Next week the clocks change and then most of my runs will be home in the light. I will have survived a winter of running.
I plod on. The best bit is through the woods in Beckenham Place Park where the ground is a little bit wet with lots of give. I try and take a short cut and follow the path through the woods (rather than the trail down the railway line) but end up way off course. I have to run across the top field and down the steep bank to exit the park.
The slog up the hill by Ravensbourne Station is hard, but at the top I am able to go into cruise mode and it's easy back home.

Up and early
I needed to run yesterday, but couldn't because of work. By the time I got home and had eaten then it was out of the question. Instead I commit to running half way to work to make up.
My son wakes up just past 6am and hour earlier than I was planning. The good news was that I was able to leave and get an early train. I get off the train at Nunhead. I look at The City a long way in the distance. It always looks further than it feels to run.
It sunny and not too cold. The run was pretty uneventful, but I get to work and feel alive.

Recovery Run to Beckenham
I had a nice recovery run back from Lewisham planned for today having got into work early. But once again busyness at work put pay to that. Instead I find the strength from somewhere to go for a quick 5km tonight.
I decide to keep the pace easy and run down to Beckenham and back. It's reasonably hilly but nothing to taxing. In the High Street the bars and restaurants are open but only a couple of patrons each.
It's a good motivator this Marathon thing, but still proud of myself for going.

Victory Snatched from the Jaws of Defeat
Didn't want to run. I have been tired and achy all day. I look at the rain radar and it is going to rain, heavily. But I have to get the long run in. I asked my wife if I could do the run in the morning but she reminded me it was Mother's Days.
If I do make the sub 3:30 marathon, it will be nights like tonight that won it.
I set off, and the rain has not set in yet. It's not great. I think about quitting but I keep on plodding and not particularly fast. I run down the A21 towards Sevenoaks. Eventually I reach the petrol station I had run to on a previous long run last year. I keep on going. The plan was to run for 3 hours. After 1"25, I decide to turn and head for home. I worry how hard it is going to be to make it home. I know it is more uphill on the way out, but there are significant downhills that I hadn't flown down.
Then suddenly things pick up. Not sure if it was the gel taken half an hour ago kicking in or the thought of going home, but suddenly I start to feel good and the pace quickens. I am running well and it feels good.
Then the heavens open and the rain really gains traction. I start to get wetter and wetter. However I keep pushing on.
With an hour or so to go I take another gel and it boosts me further. The last 6km are run at 5:16/km which is only 16 seconds per km slower than marathon pace.
I even manage to power up the hill back to my house at the 5:16/km pace.
I learned two key things from this run.
1. I can run in rain, something I usually avoid like the plague. So if it does rain race day, I will survive
2. I can pick the pace up when I am tired.

Back from Grove Park
I was going to run at lunch time but work intervened. I was going to run back from Lewisham through Beckenham Place Park but work intervened. So in the end I decide to run back from Grove Park. With a 3 hour run planned for sometime this weekend it's probably a good thing.
I am little bid jaded probably from work but also yesterdays double bubble. I reach the high point and pick up some speed but never really feel like I get going.
At home I jab the watch and the time is not too bad.

Spring is here!
I decided pretty early on today that I was going to run home from Lewisham. Even after the lunchtime run I was still on for it. The question was, would I be able to run across Beckenham Place park or would the darkness win. The sunset time according to the Weather App on my phone would suggest too dark.
As I depart Lewisham I feel tired but the recent long runs have built up so rhythmic determination. So I keep plodding along. I start to bonk but keep at it. The darkness starts to creep in.
Up in the sky I can see Jupiter and Venus, unusually close together at the moment and the only two bright items in the sky.
I get to the point where I have to decide whether to turn and head or the park or to take the longer route round. I decide to go for it.
I get to the park and the gate is open. In the end it is reasonably light. I had observed the path through the woods from the train the other day and had mentally placed myself there. Actually being there is so much better.
I run up the big hill that compromises a large part of Railway Fields. Fortunately the gate at the other side of the park is also still open despite it being quite dark now.
Then it is another slog uphill before the final cruise back home. I am eager to show Jupiter and Venus to my little girl and it pushes me on.
Once the clocks have gone back then it will be back to running the park way every time. Hoorah!

A lull in the work schedue
It's slowed down at work today so I take the opportunity for a lunchtime run. A Leadenhall loop, no less.
The weather's picking up (possibly 18c today) but it's still a bit misty and chilly..
Down by the river it is beautiful. As I run towards Tower Bridge but past the rubbish barges, I bang my arm on the metal railing. I feel sick with pain and it is bleeding. I keep running but know it is going to bruise pretty badly.
I feel a little sluggish but good to be out

Chilly early spring
I've been tired after Sunday's run, very busy at work and have had a sore neck. Despite working late (from home) I need to get out tonight.
I put on some small socks, shorts and a cycling shirt and head out towards Hayes. I soon realise that I am not wearing enough and I am cold. Still my running form feels good.
A couple of times my mind drifts to work and the pace slows as my mood sags. Then I think about flying along at Brighton and pick up the pace again.
I get to Hayes and stop outside the fish and chip shop. Inside they are showing the Chelsea game. I watch Drogba fluff a free kick and then head back.
I'm glad to have got out.

Fly in the eye long run
I've been tired this week but I need to get the long runs in the bag. I pack my kit the night before. I wake up and feel awful. My lovely wife says:
"Come on you can do it"
And I do. I get out and set of slowly for the park to run lots of flat laps. I eventually get going and after an hour I settle into a rhythm.
In one of the corners a swarm of flies appears. As I run through them I get a fly in the eye and all the discomfort that entails. |I then have to battle with the flies for the remaining laps.
2 hours in I am starting to struggle. I have the gel I have brought but then there is another issue. I need the toilet to empty my guts. I try to push on, but I realise the game is up. I am worn out and the toilet is a nice out.
I head back and complete a shorter than the the 3 hour intended run. The rest of the day I am absolutely worn out. I definitely was a good work out, just not as long as I need. I am hoping that this was a hangover from last weeks 20mile run and the tough week at work. When the big day comes I should be nicely rested and ready to go.
Last week was good, this week I was tired before I started.
When I get back my wife asks what is that on your head? I look in the mirror and there are a large number of squashed flies stuck to my sweaty forehead.

Relaxed run from Grove Park
Was ridiculously busy at work again today and I am out Monday. I had a last minute panic in the last 10 minutes before I left. I decide to run and then decide not to run. I to-and-fro a number of times.
In the end I man-up and decide to do the Grove Park to home run. My head is still dizzy from work and I decide to take it easy and try and enjoy it. And I do enjoy it.
I'm squeezing the runs in, they just need to be longer in reality. That blasted work...

Extreme Running
Still really busy at work, but I decide to run across London to Victoria. This is slightly risky as if I am more than half an hour I miss my train.
I therefore start of very fast. Zipping in and out of people. This is great fun. I keep the pace going to. I suspect I am going to blow soon.
Down by Charing Cross the crowds are dense. So I skip and bob and weave through them even more. This is great fun and it keeps the pace going.
I dig in down the Mall, past Buck House. I get caught at the traffic lights before the final push.
Such fun dancing through the crowds. Didn't even hit a single person. Probably a really good fartlek style workout as well.

Back from Grove Park Dodging the rain
The plan was a semi-easy run back from Lewisham. I get to Cannon Street and it is a disaster. The trains are all over the place. I jump on a busy train to London Bridge. There I can see the rain streaming down in the far distance. I decide to get a train to Grove Park instead and hope to make it back home before the rain.
Having an unscheduled day off (from running, certainly not work) has left me feeling fresh. I am able to push the pace a little more. One way the sky is dark, dark and yet the other way there is a beautiful sunset. Depending on which way I am heading it is either dark, dark or mood-lifting sunset.
I hardly get caught crossing any roads. I zip over the rail bridge and drive up the hill to the Church.
I think the time is going to be good, and it is. Probably the fastest I have done. Not the run I was planning or expecting but all good the same.
Also I didn't get wet at all.

Intervals on a rainy day
I needed to be running yesterday but was too busy at work. Today I decide to ignore all the work piling up and go for a run.
I notice it is a bit rainy. I decide to go and run 3 minute intervals round the covered high walks of the Barbican. It is a couple of minutes run to get there and I get a little bit wet. Because of the rain I run there quicker than I would.
As I start it is a bit slippy and I have to concentrate. I then go on to bang out 5 fairly consistent 3 minute effort with a minutes rest. The rain comes and goes but I am dry undercover even when it is hammering down.
A good session.

Recovery Run from Grove Park
I need to be disciplined. I took yesterday off as a recovery day. I think about running back from Lewisham but decide a gentle run back from Grove Park would be more appropriate. And that is what I do.
A couple of times I reign myself in from zooming away. Up the hill towards the church I feel the miles in my legs but overall a pleasant evening run.

Good Long Run
I've been worried about not running long and when I have run long it has not been good. I have the "magic" training month to get through then a couple of weeks taper into the Brighton Marathon and the sub 3-30 time.
The alarm goes of at 6:30 and I am so tempted to stay in bed. From somewhere I summon up the energy to get going. I run down to Bromley Park (confusingly in Shortlands) Fortunately it is light, if a little chilly. I then spend the next 2"40 running laps of the park. Every half an hour I turn and run the other way. This has the advantage of being totally flat. There are also no roads to cross.
I aim to run at a good slow pace. Initially I am running around 6:00 a km which is a fine long run pace. Then I gradually get faster. The advantage of running laps is that I have a couple of bottles of drink to sustain me. I also can strip of clothes as needed. Running laps also builds mental toughness.
Suddenly I am flying and really enjoying it. A banana feels like the best food ever and is eaten over four laps. In the end I settle to a pace of 5:30/km. Marathon race pace is 5:00/km.
Towards the end it gets tougher but I even manage to throw in a couple of minutes here and there of marathon race pace. With 10 minutes to go until the three hours I grab my discarded kit and run back up the hill to my house.
One mistake I did make was the nipples. In a long race I would always remember to Vaseline them. Today I didn't think to and suffer accordingly, though no blood
This went well. If I can bang out another couple of these long runs, the Marathon is going to go well.

Definitely a recovery run
I definitely need a recovery run today as I am feeling jaded. I decide to run down Fleet Street. I run up Kingsway and down Holborn to make it into a loop.
The pace is easy and it's quite enjoyable.
